Comfort Zone

Comfort Zones...

We all have places and situations in which we are relaxed, at home... comfortable. As a musician, I have mine, and this CD puts me right in my favorite neighborhoods.

The traditional classical guitar and the electric archtop jazz guitar have been two of my favorite guitar "voices" for many years.

I first heard the classical guitar played by Chet Atkins, and I loved the sound of it immediately; over the years, further listening to John Williams, Christopher Parkening, Ralph Towner, Pat Metheny, and many others reinforced that feeling. Around the same time I also heard records by Wes Montgomery, Kenny Burrell, and Johnny Smith, and came to love that sound as well.

I very much enjoy playing and recording both instruments, and over the years, I have come to like the sound of the two of them together in a duet; this is the instrumentation on all the songs except for Somewhere My Love and I’ll Be Seeing You.

Many of my all-time favorite songs are on this CD; the composers include Irving Berlin, Burt Bacharach and Hal David, John Lennon and Paul McCartney, Gordon Lightfoot, and Norah Jones. There are some personal connections as well; "Somewhere My Love" is one of the first songs I ever learned to play for my mom, and my dad loved "Autumn Leaves." All of these songs are well-known popular songs, and they tend to create a nice comfort zone for listeners.

My recording environment is another of my comfort zones; this CD was recorded entirely at home on my Macintosh, using Apple's GarageBand software.

Although most of the tunes on this CD contain improvisation and other elements common to jazz, I consider this "easy listening" music; my goal was to create music with a very relaxed atmosphere, but interesting enough to listen to in the foreground as well.

I hope it will become one of your comfort zones.
